Good to know
What is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It is a quick way to see whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height.
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight.
How is the healthy weight range worked out?
It is the weight that gives a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not tell muscle from fat, so it can be misleading for athletes, older adults, during pregnancy, and for children and teenagers, who need age-specific charts. Some health bodies use lower cut-offs for people of South Asian, Chinese and other Asian backgrounds.
